Amazon Prime Video Starts Displaying Ads in the US

Starting today, Amazon Prime Video will begin displaying ads in your content streaming, although they’re short and less frequent than the traditional TVs.

Amazon notified users about this change in September 2023 and has now began to display ads for US users. While it didn’t say how many ads it’ll stuff in, a WSJ report states the commercials would appear before a program begins and some in between.

Ads in Amazon Prime Video

Amazon’s Prime Video has long been a free perk of the company’s free shipping subscription, offering users a wide range of content ad-free for all these years.

Well, as it’s struggling to keep up with the production costs and the possible unlinking from the free shipping subscription, Amazon started displaying ads for Prime Video users in the US, starting today. The company informed the community about this change back in September 2023.

As per it’s timeline, Prime Video users in the US may start seeing ads in their content streaming, ranging up to 3.5 minutes per hour. Amazon noted the change allows them “to continue investing in compelling content and keep increasing that investment over a long period”.

Promising to show “fewer ads than linear TV and other streaming TV providers“, Amazon asked users to pay an extra $2.99 per month to avoid ads altogether! As we’re waiting to learn more about this new ad behaviour, the Wall Street Journal reported that the ads could “appear before a program begins playing, while others would interrupt it”.
