Following the suite of others, Amazon is laying off 5% of it’s Audible workforce, as per an internal memo cited by Business Insider.

The memo is penned by the Audible CEO, who noted the decision is to strengthen their business for the long term. Amazon laid off over 27,000 people last year, like every other tech firm that over-hired during the pandemic.

Starting 2024 With Layoffs

The first month of 2024 isn’t that good, as tech companies continue to cut jobs from last year after they over-hired during the pandemic season. The fresh one on the list is Audible, a popular audiobook and podcast platform owned by Amazon, which is laying off 5% of it’s workforce.

This was reported by Business Insider(via Reuters ), citing an internal memo from the Audible CEO, Bob Carrigan. He wrote;

“I want you to know that we’re making these decisions to strengthen our business for the long term.”

Amazon bought Audible in 2008 for about $300 million and placed it as one of the best audiobook platforms we know today. But with most tech companies continuing their layoff trend this year, Amazon did the same.

Amazon had cut more than 27,000 jobs last year and announced layoffs at Twitch and Audible. Other tech giants like Google and Meta announced their share of job cuts, too, last week. And with many companies investing heavily in generative AI, we may see relevant job openings soon.
