China Expands Ban on iPhones at Govt Workplaces

China Dictates its Govt Agencies to Replace Foreign PCs With Local Ones

The Chinese government is reportedly expanding the ban on using foreign devices at the workplace, with at least eight new provinces issuing directives relevant to this move, notes Bloomberg.

The employees were asked to leave foreign-made phones at home, which can impact iPhones – which many Chinese use. This would also give rise to locally made brands like Huawei, pioneering the Chinese market.

Banning iPhones at the Workplace

Possibly retaliating against the US, the Chinese government is asking it’s employees to ditch foreign-made products, primarily from Apple, for local-made devices. In 2022, the Chinese government requested it’s central and state-backed agencies to replace foreign-branded personal computers with domestic alternatives within two years.

And now, it’s directing it’s employees not to bring their iPhones to work. As per Bloomberg, at least eight provinces – Zhejiang, Guangdong, Jiangsu, Anhui, northern Shanxi, Shandong, Liaoning and central Hebei have issued directives to their employees to ditch iPhones at the workplace.

While the Chinese government has earlier pushed back on reports about iPhone restrictions, the country did raised concerns about the device’s security. And with the US kicking out every major Chinese company from their nation, the Chinese could be doing the same, too.

This aside, analysts also noted the rise of Huawei helps the government to push it’s people towards local brands. Further, independent data indicates that the iPhone 15 sales are worse in China than it’s predecessor, prompting some analysts to scale back Apple’s revenue projections.

As we wait to see how this situation escalates, Apple and China are interdependent in many cases, so either would deal with the situation with the utmost sensitivity.

While Apple needs the Chinese workforce to build it’s products and China as a consumer market – since it earns one-fifth of its revenue from China, the Asian country, on the other hand, earns a hefty sum of taxes from Apple, while also engaging it’s citizens for employment.
