Google on Friday announced extended support for allowing more real-money games on the Play Store, after piloting some apps for the last three years.

The program will start rolling out in India, Brazil and Mexico by June this year and later extends to more countries. Google is also working on a new service fee model for subscriptions and in-app purchases to earn more revenue.

Real-Money Games on the Google Play Store

After trailing for a few years, Google is extending support to allow more real-money games(RMG) on the Play Store by following the local laws. The company started allowing RMG apps on the Play Store in 2021 and has hit major markets like India in 2022, allowing fantasy sports and Rummy apps.

Last year, Google extended the deadline for approved apps until January 15, 2024. And with the date approaching, the pilot apps will have a grace period until June 30. The extended support for RMG apps will be available in India, Brazil, and Mexico in June and more countries later on.

The extended support will allow real-money gaming apps that are legal. Google said it will publish more details in the next few months, which include age limits and geo-restrictions to handle them properly.

The company has also announced a new service fee model for subscriptions and in-app purchases but didn’t disclose more details. This could be crucial for the company and the community, as an additional tax may drive people off. But on the company front, this new model could earn it the revenue it lost from waving off 30% store tax following a series of lawsuits worldwide.
