Meta Restricts Users in the EU Access to the Threads App

Meta’s Threads app is currently unavailable in European Union countries. If you reside in one of those countries, do not attempt to download or sign up for the Threads app using a VPN. Meta has confirmed that they have started blocking users in European Union countries from accessing the Threads app through a Virtual Private Network(VPN).

Twitter user Matt Navarra explains that since Meta blocked access through VPN, the contents, profiles and notifications on the new microblogging site are not showing up properly.

Twitter user @dimnls states that if users signed up using a VPN on the Threads app before the crackdown began, they can currently use the app without a VPN. However, Meta has already started working to fix this loophole and a fix will be rolled out in the coming days.

According to Meta, they are taking “further measures” to restrict users from accessing the Threads app if they reside in any countries falling under the European Union jurisdiction, as the app is unavailable in those countries. However, Facebook’s parent company, states that Europe is a “very important market” for their social media apps and they expect the Threads app to be available for users in Europe in the future.

Threads, a new microblogging app from Meta, similar to Twitter, has gained significant attention since it’s launch earlier this month. Taking leverage from Instagram’s massive user base, the new app attracted 100 million users in just five days, becoming the first app to achieve this milestone. The app is available in more than 100 countries on both iOS and Windows, except for users in Europe.

Threads is based on Instagram’s infrastructure and is linked to Instagram. Users need to have an Instagram account to log in to Threads, allowing the new app to import data from Instagram. The European Union wants to ensure that Threads complies with the EU’s upcoming Digital Market Act regarding data sharing with other social media apps. Earlier this year, the EU also asked Meta to seek permission for showing personalized ads on Facebook to users in Europe.

Meta must comply with EU rules and regulations to make it’s app available to users in Europe. Mark Zuckerberg states that the growth of the new app is completely organic and without any advertisements. Currently, the new app poses the biggest threat to Elon Musk-owned Twitter. Analysts believe that Twitter’s traffic has already declined since the launch of the new app and Twitter’s implementation of new daily tweet view restrictions on the platform.
