Meta’s Upcoming Feature Allows Users to Separate Threads from Instagram Accounts

Meta is developing a new feature enabling users to delete their Threads app accounts without affecting their Instagram accounts. Threads, a text-based app from Meta similar to Twitter, gained rapid popularity upon it’s release in July of this year. It achieved the remarkable milestone of amassing 100 million users within five days. Nonetheless, Threads experienced a decline in users shortly after, with many returning to Twitter due to it’s more extensive feature set than Meta’s.

Threads app is intricately linked to Instagram, allowing users to register for the app using their Instagram accounts. This linkage means that when Threads app users opt to delete their accounts, their Instagram accounts are also deleted. However, this situation is poised to change as Meta will likely introduce an update for the Threads app in December, allowing users to disconnect their Threads and Instagram accounts.

During the recent Techcrunch Disrupt event, Meta’s Chief Privacy Officer, Michael Protti, shared this upcoming development. According to him, this new feature is scheduled to roll out to users in December of this year. In July, Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, mentioned they were actively working on a method to delink the two apps. Meta’s developers have successfully devised a tool to delink both accounts without causing deactivation.

Web developer Alessandro Paluzzi made a noteworthy discovery last week, revealing that Meta is working on a new feature allowing users to delete their Threads accounts. However, users who wish to rejoin the Threads app must wait at least 120 days before reconnecting their Threads account to the same Instagram account.

Michael Protti also disclosed that Meta plans to integrate Threads with the Fediverse shortly. For those unfamiliar with the term, the Fediverse encompasses multiple social media apps that can communicate with one another.

Meta launched the Threads app as a direct competitor to Elon Musk’s Twitter when Musk was introducing numerous new features and restrictions to Twitter. Despite it’s initial surge in popularity, the Threads started losing users. Consequently, Meta developed several new features that should have been included on the app at it’s launch. Most of these features are currently in development and are set to be rolled out soon.
