Microsoft Laments on Google Search’s Default Status on Smartphones

The Big Tech testifying at the US Department of Justice’s antitrust trial has Microsoft to question Google’s authority in the search engine market.

Redmond’s vice president has lamented how Bing could not achieve the same success as Google in the mobile search market despite it’s readiness to provide 100% or even more revenue share to it’s partners. He stated that Bing is not the default search engine on any Android or iPhone in the past decade.

Slashing on Google Being the Default Search Engine

Everyone knows the world’s famous search engine is Google but did you know this feat was achieved through paid deals? According to reports, Google has been paying smartphone makers and wireless carriers billions of dollars yearly to stay as the default search engine on their devices.

And based on this, the US Department of Justice is trailing an antitrust lawsuit against Google, alongside Microsoft and Apple. In the ongoing trial, the DoJ accuses Google of paying $10 billion annually to wireless carriers and smartphone makers to keep Google as the default search engine on their devices.

Arguing that Google has abused it’s monopoly in search and some aspects of search advertising, the DoJ is trying to break it’s business, aside sucking a hefty fine. Amidst this, Microsoft Vice President Jonathan Tinter testified at the DoJ that Google hinders Bing’s growth.

He claims that Apple and other smartphone vendors have turned down Bing’s offer to stay default on their devices, although the company is willing to let partners keep 100% or even more of the revenues. Instead, they accepted Google’s offers to keep it dominant.

Tinter has also pointed to an analysis done by Keystone Strategies from 2010 that states that people who discover Bing use it only for a very short time. This led a lawyer for Google to slash Tinter to clarify whether it was money or poor quality that prevented Bing from ousting Google as the default search engine on smartphones.
