North Korean Hackers Cyberattacks US-South Korea Military Drill, Fails

South Korean police have reported an unsuccessful cyberattack by a suspected North Korean hacking group aimed at stealing sensitive information.

The investigation revealed the threat actor targeted their 11-day Ulchi Freedom Guardian summer exercise, held jointly by the US and South Korean military, aimed at improving their defence against North Korean nuclear and missile advancements.

Attempting to Intrude and Steal Data

A suspected North Korean hacking group has tried to breach the US-South Korea military exercise this week by cyber-attacking the relevant department to steal sensitive information.

Thwarted successfully, the initial investigation by South Korean and US police revealed the IP address involved in the hacking attempt matched with a 2014 hack against South Korea’s nuclear reactor operator. The attack was orchestrated by a North Korean hacking group called Kimsuky.

Further, assuring that no data was stolen in this incident, the Gyeonggi Nambu Provincial Police Agency said the attempt was against the 11-day Ulchi Freedom Guardian summer exercises to improve the South Korean military against North Korean nuclear and missile advancements.

But observing these drills as a potential invasion by their South Korean military, led by the US, North Korea objects to such exercises and thus tries to disrupt them and Kimsuky was just a part of it, specialising in spear phishing campaigns.

To the unknown, spear phishing involves sending specially crafted emails to selected targets to steal sensitive data for the government’s benefit. North Korea has several threat actors doing such, some tasked to steal confidential data, while some at stealing money.
