Samsung Unveils World’s First Transparent MicroLED Display

Samsung, at the First Look event of CES 2024, debuts three transparent micro LED displays without pricing and availability details.

While two demo units feature tinted transparent glass, the other boasts a plain transparent display with a frameless design and with high pixel density, these displays create sharp images and an illusion of hologram output.

Samsung’s Transparent MicroLED Displays

Besides smartphones and chip making, Samsung excels in the display market, with it’s advanced technologies producing never-seen-before screens for various devices. This week at CES 2024, the South Korean giant has developed the world’s first transparent MicroLED display.

Samsung debuted not one but three different transparent micro LED displays – all slightly varied in designs. While one display is fully transparent with frameless design, the other two feature a tinted glass. This makes it less distracting to hide the objects behind the panels.

All the demo units play a single vertical video overflowing with EDM music, so we can’t determine how good the output is. But from what’s showcased, the output seems like a hologram image due to the display’s transparency.

The displays are freestanding and measured only about a centimetre thick, supporting my illusion claim. And with the high pixel density, images also looked incredibly sharp. Furthermore, these transparent MicroLED panels have higher brightness levels to make the ambient light less impactful.

All in all, these units are good enough to fit in a premium house or in an office to watch rich-quality content. But their pricing couldn’t be expected to be affordable. While there’s no info on the pricing and availability details, Samsung may tag them around $150,000-200,000 a unit, considering their current non-transparent MicroLED TVs cost $150,000 for a 110-inch model.
