Sony’s New PS5 Beta Update Adds M.2 SSD Storage Support Upto 8TB

PS5 Rest Mode Crashing Issue

A new beta update coming to the PlayStation 5 adds several new features – including Dolby Atmos, a second controller for assistance, UI changes etc.

Best of all, the update supports extending the M2 SSD storage support of up to 8TB. Also, there are improvements to social features, Game Help and a search option has been added for the games library. Make sure to update your PS5 if you’re a beta tester to see the changes.

PS5 Beta Update Features

Like Xbox Insider, PlayStation has it’s beta program, too, although it’s not so widespread and active. Sony pushes a new update occasionally, but it comes with significant features. This time, it’s adding many new features and improvements, as below.

Starting with the UI, users can see enhancements made to the social features and Game Help section while also adding the most requested search option in the game library, making it easier to find your favourite game. Also, Sony added accessibility features like using a second controller for assistance and the option to turn on haptic feedback while in the system UI.

Further, Sony adds Dolby Atmos support to your games, provided that you can access audio devices like TVs and soundbars. This provides 3D Audio powered by Tempest 3D Audio to enjoy the games better and finally, the update increases the storage capacity of M.2 SSDs from the current 4 TB limit to 8 TB, letting players store more games.

Though Sony says all these features are coming in the new beta update, there’s no timeline mentioned for it’s arrival. So keep checking in the update centre for the latest version.

And if you haven’t been a Beta tester already, but are interested, enrol in the program here. Before doing so, ensure you meet the following requirements, as the Beta program is currently limited.

According to Sony, The PlayStation 5 Beta program is available only to those in the U.S., Canada, Japan, the UK, Germany, or France and you should be at least 18 years of age. Further, they should have a valid PSN account in good standing with a current email address. Guest accounts, child accounts and offline accounts are not eligible.

If you tick all the boxes, submit your PSN account details in the beta program to join. Please note that this won’t guarantee you beta access. But if you’re lucky enough, download the update by going to Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings > Update System Software(beta).
