Speedometer 3: A New Benchmark Standard From Google, Apple and Mozilla

Google, Apple, and Mozilla have teamed up to create the next benchmark standard to test product responsiveness – Speedometer 3.

This project is in the nascent stages of development, as the developers suggest users try Speedometer 2.1 instead. The new project would require approval from all three companies for making significant changes, while at least one for making minor changes.

Making a New Benchmark Standard

To let people trust your products, you should test them against the industry standard to be effective. And the ones that set industry standards are mostly the big players in that certain industry.

Google, Apple, and Mozilla are a few names in the tech industry that often take the lead in developing new projects and standards, with the latest one being Speedometer 3 – a new benchmark standard for testing their digital products’ responsiveness.

Describing this as a “cross-industry collaborative effort“, the three companies aim to create a new model that balances their visions for measuring responsiveness. While this seemed harmful for the competition and only a big players game, they’re at least trying to be questionable among themselves.

The new standard – Speedometer 3, has a governing policy that requires a significant change to the system to be approved by two of the parties, while a minor change should be approved by at least one of the other two parties in the consortium.

This is to let the “team working should be able to move quickly for most changes, with a higher level of process and consensus expected based on the impact of the change,” notes developers.

This project is still in the early stage of development, as the developer working on it suggests people try Speedometer 2.1 if needed, but the in-development Speedometer 3 is already in the makes.
