WhatsApp is reportedly testing a new file-sharing feature called ‘People Nearby,’ that’ll let users share content in close proximity.

People sharing a file should open the People Nearby panel and shake their phone to generate a share request. It’s unknown if this works without an internet connection and what tools it’ll use, like WiFi or Bluetooth. Yet, WhatsApp says the file-sharing process is end-to-end encrypted, and no phone number is shared with non-contacts.

While it’s unknown where this option will appear, screenshots shared by WaBetaInfo show that file-sharing through this feature is end-to-end encrypted and your phone number will not be shared with unknown people.

Instead, your device will be visible with your username, making the process more privacy-centric. People need to shake their devices to initiate file transfer, but it’s unknown if it works without an active internet connection. Also, it’s unknown what device features the People Nearby will leverage, like WiFi or Bluetooth, like other file-sharing tools.

WhatsApp allows users to share files of up to 2GB limit but they need an active internet connection. So, having a feature to share files without the internet is good. There’s no information on when it could roll to the stable channel or the WhatsApp iOS app.
