WhatsApp to Hide Your IP Address on Voice and Video Calls

WhatsApp is Working on a Chat-Level Authentication System

WhatsApp is reportedly testing the ability to hide IP addresses on your calls, offering users more anonymity while communicating with others.

Spotted on the latest WhatsApp beta for iOS, this option is available in the Privacy section of the app. Enabling this will hide your IP address on voice and video calls with others. While it’s appreciated, enabling this feature will reduce your call quality due to an extra layer of security.

Concealing IP Address on WhatsApp Calls

WhatsApp has long been touting that it’s chats are secured with end-to-end encryption. But are they really secure? Well, the answer depends on the number of bugs it carries, which eventually could leak the conversation. A bitter-known fact is that you can still find the IP address of a person despite no bugs being present.

And it’s worrying to some users, as an active conversation with a perpetrator, could easily allow them find out your location through an IP address. There are a bunch of tools to do so. While one uses a command prompt to detect your IP address, some use dedicated apps for this very purpose. Whatever the way they get through, it’s essential to hide your IP address to be more secure.

Realizing this need, WhatsApp is testing a new option in the Privacy Settings to let users hide their IP address during voice and video calls. As noted by WaBetaInfo, the latest WhatsApp beta for iOS v23.20.1.73 has a new option called “Protect IP address in calls” in the privacy section of Settings.

Enabling it will start relaying your voice and video calls through WhatsApp servers for anonymity, which hardens the tracking process. While it’s appreciable for more profound privacy, users may face a reduced call quality due to the extra layer of protection.

Despite the calls touted through WhatsApp servers for anonymity, they’re still end-to-end encrypted to keep your communications secure.
