BMW Digital Key Plus is Now Available to Android Phones

Months after BMW introduced it’s Digital Key Plus for iPhones, the car company is now bringing this support to Android phones, where users can remotely lock and unlock their connected BMW car.

Well, this support is only limited to the models manufactured after November 2022 and select phones from Samsung and Pixel brands. Based on UWB technology, experts claim this connectivity is a much more reliable one than radio signals.

Unlocking a Car With Your Phone

BMW when launching it’s Digital Key Plus last year promised to bring support for Android devices. Now, the company announced support for this new feature to select Samsung and Pixel phones today.

More specifically, the handsets Galaxy S23+, S23 Ultra, S22+, S22 Ultra, S21+, S21 Ultra, Z Fold 4, Z Fold 3, Note 20 Ultra (in markets with Samsung Wallet) and Pixel 7 Pro and Pixel 6 Pro are eligible. The feature would come to all the devices with ultra-wideband (UWB) technology – which is the core factor this feature works on.

Until now, BMW’s Digital Key Plus is available for select iPhones and Apple Watches – letting users lock and unlock their connected BMW without a physical key. They can just do it with their phones, or even hands-free with an automatic setting.

For example, the car will automatically get locked if you move away from it(even without using the phone). Similarly, it gets unlocked while you’re approaching closer to it(if you have the phone along with it). While this feature works only for select BMW models(vehicles produced on and after November 2022), a software update in the future may bring it’s support to some older models too.
