Google Messages Hit 1 Billion Active RCS Users, Adds New Features

On the occasion of hitting a billion active users for it’s RCS chats, Google Messages added new features to celebrate the feat, this week.

While most of them are grabbed from rival messengers, they add a fun touch to boring conversations and placed Google Messages as one of the exciting texting platforms. Some included Photomoji, Screen Effects, Animated Emojis, etc. Here are they;

Google Messages New Features

As noted above, here are the explanations for each new feature that Google introduced at it’s 1-billion RCS users milestone.

Photomoji

Google announced Photomoji – an AI feature that lets users make stickers from an image. When available, you can select an object or subject from an image to turn it into a sticker using “on-device Google AI”. Stickers created as such will be saved to a dedicated tab so that you can reuse them later.

If that seems familiar to you, yes, Apple has it on iOS 17, to let users make stickers from images. So, we should see how Google differentiates from it.

Voice Moods

To make voice messages more personal and expressive, Google lets you share them in nine different animated themes, representing various moods. Also, Google claims to have improved the voice quality with a higher bitrate and sampling rate.

Screen Effects

Similar to Easter eggs, chats on Google Messages will spread out an animating effect based on specific keywords spit into the conversation. While Google examples with ‘Love’ and ‘Snowing,’ it asks the users to find all 15+ new animations by themselves.

Chat Background Colors

Like Facebook Messenger, you can now customise your chat themes depending on the person you’re conversing with – which are visible to you and them. You can choose a chat colour to be reflected in the background and be done with the routine blue theme.

Animated Emojis

Grabbing from Telegram, Google Messages will now let users react to a message with animated emojis. Some examples include 👍❤️ 😂😮😡👎💩🎉😠😢.  Also, instead of displaying a sticky standard emoji, sending some popular emojis in chats will automatically be animated.
