TikTok to Cut Music from Universal Music Group

FCC Asks Apple and Google to Delist TikTok From Their App Stores

The licensing deal between TikTok and Universal Music Group has fallen apart, pushing the short-video entertainment platform to cut music belonging to the studio’s artistes.

This will effectively cut music from billions of TikTok videos and offer a limited set of audio options for future creators. Both companies accused each other of greed and decided not to renew their licensing deal after January 30, 2024.

No Music from Universal Studios on TikTok

On the last day of their licensing agreement, both TikTok and Universal Music Group decided not to renew their relationship for music rights and accused each other of being greedy! Universal Music Group claims that TikTok is bullying into a deal worth less than it’s previous arrangement.

TikTok claims that UMG has “chosen to walk away” from them, as they “put their greed above the interests of their artistes and songwriters“. Furthermore, “TikTok has reached ‘artiste-first’ agreements with every other label and publisher. Universal’s self-serving actions are not in the best interests of artists, songwriters and fans“.

Universal Music Group also noted that artiste compensation and AI have been troubling their TikTok deal, which fell apart today, leading to UMG pulling it’s entire library from TikTok this week.

This includes music from artistes like Taylor Swift, Bad Bunny, Sting, The Weeknd, Alicia Keys, SZA, Steve Lacy, Drake, Billie Eilish, Kendrick Lamar, Rosalía, Harry Styles, Ariana Grande, Justin Bieber, Adele, U2, Elton John, J Balvin, Brandi Carlile, Coldplay, Pearl Jam, Bob Dylan and Post Malone.

What will happen to existing TikTok videos with music from the above artistes is still unknown but they could display a no-sound warning after today! Also, cutting off the UMG library will limit the audio catalogue for future creators.
