WhatsApp Pushes Users to Check Their Privacy Settings

Whatsapp End-to-End Encrypted backup

WhatsApp, in a blog post today, announced a new Privacy Checkup tool that will appear for one-time and let users quick-check their privacy settings on the app.

You can toggle off unnecessary permissions or settings in this review and change them individually later. Also, WhatsApp now supports silencing unknown callers by default, although you should turn this feature on for the first time.

Privacy Settings and Muting Calls

WhatsApp has long been known for it’s simple UI and basic settings. Though these features put the instant messenger top in it’s segment, it’s often criticised for user privacy and slow rollout of new features. Well, lately, the platform is catching up on all these terms.

After adding screen-sharing support, WhatsApp can now silence unknown callers automatically. This was announced today in a blog post and needed the user to toggle on this option initially. Though it mutes the unknown callers by default, you can still see them as missed calls in the notification panel and the Calls tab.

This is an essential addition, as scammers are WhatsApp calling their targets for various malicious purposes. This aside, WhatsApp has also added a new Privacy Checkup banner in Settings, where users can review their privacy settings quickly.

Available only for the first time, users can see their contacts and personal info controls and who can access their chats and account data. You can toggle the unnecessary settings here quickly and modify them later individually if needed.

WhatsApp claims to “provide a safe and confidential environment for individuals to express themselves, particularly with those they hold dear more”, encouraging it’s users to secure their chats with basic privacy settings.
