OpenAI Reinstates Sam Altman as its CEO

A near week-long saga of OpenAI’s CEO status has ended, as the company reinstated Sam Altman as its CEO after firing him last Friday.

OpenAI has also refreshed the board to include Former Salesforce co-CEO Bret Taylor and former US treasury secretary Larry Summers and even called back Greg Brockman – the president and co-founder of OpenAI who resigned following Altman’s firing.

Settling the CEO Chaos

OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT that stirred the AI world, is finally settling the CEO chaos by reinstating Sam Altman as it’s head after firing him over no “confidence” motion.

Last Friday, the OpenAI board consisting of Adam D’Angelo, Tasha McCauley, Helen Toner, and Ilya Sutskever decided to oust Sam Altman from the firm, noting they had “lost confidence” in his leadership. They stated that Altman has failed to properly communicate when needed.

Soon, they named OpenAI’s chief technology officer, Mira Murati, as the interim CEO, which was later handed to Emmett Shear. But not long enough, the OpenAI board had to collapse all these plans and reinstate Sam Altman as the CEO, and even dumped some of it’s board members!

These decisions were triggered by the warning from OpenAI employees – who threatened to leave the company and join Sam Altman in his subsequent pursuit. Putting more pressure on the OpenAI board, Microsoft – a lead investor in OpenAI has offered Mr Altman a job by forming a “new advanced AI research team” at their place. Redmond has also stated that it’ll hire all the leaving OpenAI employees in case they quit.

Unable to bear such consequences, OpenAI has reinstated Altman, saying they’ve “reached an agreement in principle for Sam Altman to return to OpenAI as CEO with a new initial board of Bret Taylor (Chair), Larry Summers, and Adam D’Angelo.”

Confirming this, Altman on Wednesday posted on X that he’s returning to OpenAI, and they would build on a “strong partnership with Microsoft“. OpenAI is also hiring back Greg Brockman, co-founder of OpenAI, who resigned following Altman’s initial exit.
