WhatsApp’s Support for Editing Messages is Coming Soon

WhatsApp 'Chat Lock' is Coming Soon, Confirms Mark Zuckerberg

The ability to edit sent messages in WhatsApp is nearing it’s availability – as WaBetaInfo shows the latest Android beta having this support.

Messages edited under this will have the “edited” tag along with them and will let users read the unedited version too. While it’s likely that we will see this feature soon, details like how many times we can edit a message and the time duration for this aren’t known as yet.

Editing Sent Messages on WhatsApp

Though WhatsApp has over two billion monthly active users, it’s still not the best instant messenger when it comes to new features. While rivals like Telegram and Signal are advancing with new features every now and then, WhatsApp is still lagging behind on community-requested features.

One among them is the ability to edit sent messages, which WhatsApp has been experimenting with since 2017! While we’re yet to see light on this, WaBetaInfo says the time for it’s public availability is almost near. Checking the latest Android beta of WhatsApp has this ability – where users can edit sent messages in a conversation.

Edited messages will bear the “edited” tag and let the chat participants see the unedited version too. Well, this saves us from the current embarrassing correction of using asterisk, or just deleting the messages for everyone and typing it all over again.

In the latest screenshots shared by WaBetaInfo, WhatsApp says this feature is available only on the latest version of it’s app, so outdated clients will not see the unedited versions of a message. As we await it’s availability, more details like the maximum editing period and how many times one can edit a message are unknown.

Previous reports suggested that senders can edit sent messages for up to 15 minutes, but this may change in the final rollout. To know further, let’s wait for the next Android beta to know more.
